Advocate General for Scotland

The Prime Minister has appointed Neil Davidson QC to the post of Advocate General for Scotland, the senior Scots legal adviser to the Government.

Neil Davidson was called to the Scots Bar in 1979 has been a QC since 1993. He was called to the English Bar in 1990 and was Solicitor-General for Scotland from 2000-2001. He was a founder/director of the City Disputes Panel from 1994-2000 and Chair of the Faculty of Advocates Human Rights Committee.

During his time in practice he has covered a broad range of commercial and public law work. This has included international business advisory work in addition to arguing human rights cases from Scotland before the Privy Council. He also has considerable experience in judicial review and local government work. He co-authored the first work on Judicial Review in Scotland.

Following the resignation of the previous office holder, Baroness Clark of Calton QC, on 18 January 2006 to become a judge in Scotland, the functions of the Advocate General were temporarily conferred on the Secretary of State for Scotland, Alistair Darling MP under section 87(3) of the Scotland Act. This conferral ceased with the appointment of Neil Davidson QC as Advocate General.
