Scots are being encouraged to think twice before replying to bogus get rich quick schemes that may arrive on their doormats offering unexpected prizes and financial benefits, Scotland Office Minister Anne McGuire today revealed.
Speaking as the Department for Trade and Industry (DTI) announced a new campaign to combat bogus postal promotions, Mrs McGuire said:
"Thousands of Scots are being targeted everyday in their homes by these scams that arrive through the post and promise mystery prizes or huge financial gain. People are encouraged to send off money or make a purchase before they win their prize unaware that it is unlikely they will receive anything.
"These scams cost the UK public an estimated £100 million a year so it is vital we publicise their existence and warn people not to take part. This really is the most intrusive way of conning someone out of their money – by delivering direct to their door.
"We want to urge people to think more carefully before they send cash to these bogus firms – you should ask yourself if you can afford to lose the money you’re sending off and if you know what you are paying for. Listen to that little voice in your head screaming that it’s too good to be true.
"I strongly believe people throughout the UK should be told about the perils of sending money and getting involved in such a scam. I am therefore pleased that this new campaign will raise awareness and hopefully make people think twice before parting with their cash."
