Reid hails Government and community action for lone parents

Thousands of lone parents across Scotland are benefiting from the Government’s action on employment, Scottish Secretary John Reid said today.

He also acknowledged the contribution made by community groups in providing training and information on a range of issues.

Speaking in Glasgow at an event organised by the Greater Easterhouse Lone Parent Forum to mark the successful completion of training courses, Mr Reid said:

"We are determined to work with community groups wherever possible so that everyone in our society is given the respect and self-esteem they deserve. Their views should be heard at all levels of Government.

"The Greater Easterhouse Lone Parent Forum provides training and educational opportunities for lone parents, as well as a comprehensive information and advice service.

"The Government has already taken significant steps to help lone parents. Our Working Families Tax Credit helps over 100,000 families in Scotland, around half of them headed by lone parents. Those receiving the Working Families Tax Credit are around £30 a week better off.

"A total of 17,000 Scots have received advice on training and jobs through the New Deal for Lone Parents, with 7,000 moving into work. The Chancellor announced in the Pre-Budget Report that we would extend this initiative, so that even more people could benefit.

"But the Government cannot do everything. Individuals and communities must play their part too, which is why community groups are vital. They provide another source of support so that individuals can build up their self esteem and face the world. We are committed to giving lone parents the help they deserve to change their lives for the better."
