A proud day for all of Scotland – that was how Scottish Secretary John Reid described the 400thanniversary of the founding of the Scots College in Rome today.
Speaking during a visit to Rome Mr Reid said:
"This institution has stood the test of time and witnessed wars and invasions and yet has remained constant in providing a place for the training of priests. This special college was founded by Pope Clement VIII in 1600 during the Reformation period. The circumstances of history meant that Catholics looked to the continent to provide places to train priests for ministry in Scotland.
"Thankfully we live in different times and we are building in Scotland an open and tolerant society where everyone has a place. We live in a diverse society - we should strive to celebrate that diversity and appreciate the richness that each brings from their own traditions and faiths.
"Scotland has always looked to develop an international presence. The Scots College in Rome has not only served the needs of the Catholic community but, also provided a welcome and beneficial "embassy" for Scottish interests in this fascinating city. It has in many ways acted as a bridge between Scotland and Rome.
"I very much hope that the Scots College continues to serve the Catholic Church in Scotland provide a place of welcome for all Scots in Rome."
