Latest figures show that over 20,000 Scottish families already stand to benefit from the Working Families Tax Credit (WFTC) after telephoning a special Helpline advertised on Scottish television stations and receiving a claim pack.
More than 45,000 calls have been generated by an advertisement for the Tax Credits Helpline from Scottish parents seeking to find out how the WFTC can make work pay for them.
Commenting on these figures, Scottish Secretary John Reid said:
"I am delighted that the Tax Credits Helpline has generated such a high level of interest in Scotland. With more than 45,000 calls the helpline has proved an outstanding success and over 20,000 Scottish families have already been sent a claim pack to allow them to take advantage of the new tax credit system. We estimate that up to 140,000 families in Scotland could benefit from the WFTC. It aims to provide a fairer deal for families across the UK by raising incomes and lowering the tax burden for those with children and it is encouraging that the Scottish response has been so positive.
"The Government is committed to make work pay. The WFTC encourages parents without work to move into employment and helps those in relatively low-paid jobs move up the earnings ladder. Families could benefit, depending upon their individual circumstances, by up to £136 per week.
"Thousands of Scottish families have already taken steps to find out how the WTFC can boost their income by calling the Helpline and I urge other parents to follow their lead."
