Wilson encouraged by new work at DAKS Simpson

03 Dec 1999

Following a meeting with management at DAKS Simpson in Larkhall today, Scotland Office Minister Brian Wilson said he was greatly encouraged by the company's efforts to expand its customer base and secure the long term future of the plant.

Mr Wilson said:

"From my visit here today I can detect a very positive mood. Everyone involved in the company is working extremely hard to secure new work to replace that which will be lost by the termination of the Marks and Spencer contract.

"Indeed, the recent decision by M&S to increase the size of their Spring/Summer 2000 order is a tribute to the unquestionably high quality of the workforce's output.

"I know that DAKS Simpson's employees appreciate that the company has been making every effort to secure additional orders. We have been giving every possible support. Management have confirmed once again that they are anxious to ensure the profitable continuation of their operations in Scotland.

"The Government recognises the difficulties currently being encountered by textile firms, and supports the Textiles and Clothing Strategy Group in identifying how to secure the long-term future of the industry."
