The high quality of Scottish craftsmanship and design will be on the agenda when Scotland Office Minister Brian Wilson promotes the British Fashion Industry at "Pitti Immagine", one of the world's leading Menswear Trade Fairs in Florence today (Friday 12 January).
The fair will attract more than 50 UK design houses and clothing manufacturers, including top household names from Scotland such as Johnston's of Elgin, Lyle & Scott and Traditional Weatherwear.
Mr Wilson will be supporting Scottish companies who want to develop and exploit their export markets even further.
Before leaving for Florence, Mr Wilson said:
"I am delighted to be promoting the British fashion industry at one of the world's most prestigious menswear shows. It is good that so many of Scotland's finest products are being exhibited today.
"Well-known names from across Scotland, including Johnston's of Elgin, Lyle & Scott and Traditional Weatherwear, are represented in Florence today. Another famous Scottish name, Sir Sean Connery, will also be attending, to receive one of the inaugural British Menswear Guild awards for British style.
"Once again, the Scottish cashmere industry represents the very best of Scottish quality and design. 98 per cent of British cashmere is produced in Scotland. Now the new Cashmere Made in Scotland identification label guarantees the best cashmere in the world.
"I am also pleased that the traditional Mackintosh - invented in Scotland - is now part of the portfolio of many of the top design houses in Europe and America and is selling under own-label brands throughout the world. Traditional Weatherwear has, with its Mackintosh label, turned the traditional raincoat into a cutting-edge top fashion garment.
"It has not been an easy time for our textile industries. But this exhibition proves that through high quality and strong design the industry can develop and expand. Once again, Pitti Imagine offers our companies the opportunity to demonstrate the strength of that quality and design on a world platform and I am delighted to offer my support."
