Scottish Secretary Helen Liddell addressed Nato Ambassadors from around the world today when she spoke at a Burns supper in Brussels this evening (22 January), hosted by the Secretary General of Nato Lord Robertson.
Replying to the "toast to the lassies", Helen Liddell said:
"Burns was one of the great internationalists of his generation. His passion for Scotland was complemented by a belief that to develop, Scots must reach beyond the confines of our own boundaries and achieve an understanding with those around us.
"This belief of bringing people together for the common good is reflected in possibly his most famous song, "Auld lang syne". In these difficult times on the international stage, I think there is a lot to learn from the sentiments conveyed in this song which is known today throughout the world."
Proceeds from this fund raising event will go to the Erskine Hospital in Scotland and VIVAT in Belgium, two charities involved in the welfare of miltary veterans. A number of Scottish producers have sponsored the event by providing a range of food and drink.
All guests will receive information on the Secretary of State's Friends of Scotland initiative. Mrs Liddell will also be promoting the initiative when she addresses a Burns supper in Dublin on Friday 24 January. Over 100 guests will receive information packs detailing the initiative.
