Jim Murphy welcomes rail link plans as boost for Scotland

15 Jan 2009

The Secretary of State for Scotland Jim Murphy welcomed today's Commons statement on Britain's transport infrastructure.

He said:

"This is good news for Scotland. The expansion of Heathrow is good for Scottish businesses. It will ensure that the vital links to Heathrow and its international destinations are maintained.

"On top of that, we are now closer to real high speed rail links between Scotland and London. I welcome the setting up of the new company HS2 to explore the potential for HS rail to Scotland. And the high speed link to Birmingham will cut rail times form Glasgow to London to 3 and a half hours.

"This is the beginning of a 21st century revolution in transport. No one can deny effective and modern transport links are vital to Scotland's future success. I fully welcome and support the long-term ambition of a high-speed rail link between London and Scotland outlined in the Commons today. A high-speed network would be an important addition to the UK's integrated transport system and has the potential to broaden choice and access for travel to and from Scotland.

"The creation of a first-stage rail link between London and the West Midlands has the potential to equalise ? or better ? the travelling times for short haul flights and rail journeys which can only be good news for business, individuals and the environment. I plan to follow the development of the plans closely and will work to ensure Scotland's interests are heard throughout that process."

Commenting on the Government's plans for the expansion of Heathrow, he said:

"The news of a third runway for Heathrow is a pragmatic decision by the UK Government which will underpin the future of an essential aviation hub and a key economy. The airport is one of the busiest in Europe and a vital link for Scottish business, tourism and freight across the UK. The fact remains that the airport is operating at the boundaries of its capacity and the need for increased capacity is a pressing and real issue .

"Today's announcement takes consideration of the parallel needs of the economy and the environment. It is a choice which also includes a wide range of environmental safeguards and conditions."
