Jim Murphy sends Chinese New Year message

26 Jan 2009

The Scottish Secretary has sent a new year message to Chinese communities across Scotland at the start of the year of the Ox.

Jim Murphy said: "I would like to wish Chinese communities across Scotland the very best on this special day. The Chinese community is important to Scotland and contributes to our diversity, economy and universities.

"The Ox symbolises perseverance and hard work - attributes which are exemplified by many from our Chinese communities. I was pleased to learn, for instance, that Lui On Lee, a British Chinese businessman from Stirling, recently received an OBE for his voluntary work with the Chinese community in the Forth Valley over 23 years. Mr Lee has helped more than 300 Chinese families gain important skills that will help them and Scotland flourish.

"The qualities of the Ox are ones that may stand all of us across Scotland in good stead this year as we continue to face the fallout from the global economic crisis. The UK Government will continue to provide support and opportunities for all Scots and, combined with that perseverance and hard work, I believe we will be well equipped to weather the economic storm. I hope you, your family and your friends all enjoy a successful year."
