Introduction

This section outlines the history of how Scottish business has been organised in Government and the background to Dover House, the London Headquarters of the Scotland Office.

Click here for a brief history of Scottish representation in Government, from the Union of the Crowns to Post Devolution. You can find a complete list of all the Scottish Secretaries since 1707 here.

Dover House was originally built in 1754 and in the 1800’s was the venue for the infamous affair between Lady Caroline Lamb and Lord Byron. For a more detailed architectural and social history of the building, click here or choose from an individual section on the left.
